5 Marketing Tips You Won’t Learn in College

Marketing is a popular major in colleges throughout the US. Most colleges follow a standard curriculum that produces cookie cutter professionals that flood the work force with the same ideas and strategies year after year. Instead of following the crowds, take advantage of these 5 marketing tips to put your career or your business ahead of the competition.

1. Forget everything you learned in college

While your professors marketing advice was probably well-intentioned, it’s unfortunately the same advice every other marketing professional has received. If everyone knows the same things about marketing, all marketing campaigns are going to be pretty much the same. That’s not a great way to attract customers. You want to be new, different and innovative. You can’t learn any of those things from a text book or a classroom.

2. Take risks

Without risks there are no rewards. Being risky in marketing will do one of two things: make you or break you. Don’t go crazy with the risks and try thing you know won’t work, but instead, aim for “calculated risks”. The idea is to create a campaign that’s edgy and risky, but that won’t be a complete failure if your “big idea” doesn’t come across the way you hoped it would.

3. Stay up to date with the current technologies

With DVR’s in virtually every home, very few people are watching commercials anymore. You can create the best commercial in the world, but if everyone fast forwards through it, nobody will see it and it won’t get the results you need. Staying up to date on the current technologies will help you understand where you should focus your efforts.

4. Take into consideration your audience

There’s nothing worse than an advertisement that’s aimed at the wrong generation or the wrong gender. Remember that in today’s world, old stereotypes are often not applicable, so do some real research into who the audience is rather than just making assumptions based on a table you saw in your marketing 101 textbook.

5. Realize that not all press is good press

If your company royally fails at something, such as customer service or product quality, you’re not going to benefit from simply having people talk about how awful your company is. In today’s internet-driven world, negative feelings about a company are easy to find and hard to erase. The goal is to always have more positive reviews than negative ones. Monitor your social networks and Google search your company once in a while to get an idea of the general attitude regarding your product. If things get dire, don’t hesitate to rebrand, but be ready to explain to your customers how you’ve changed.

Marketing is becoming less about flashy ads and more about making real connections with your customer base. The internet and other technologies are changing the way that customers are able to research brands and interact with other consumers. Maintaining a positive online presence is just as important in marketing as creating a dynamic and inviting product label.
